Previous Next
This digital painting depicts a Mississippian Priest holding the severed head of a captive, and a ceremonial flint mace. Many mississippian societies seemed to have a warrior aristocracy, and may have been ruled by the king/priests of the warrior cult. Many of the symbols in this painting such as the whelk necklace, ceremonial mace, and the hawks eye makeup on the severed head are associated with the "Southern Death Cult" or "Buzzard Cult"  as it is sometimes known.
