"Twin gods emerging from crack in back of underworld snake monster". Based on an engraved shell design from Spiro, Oklahoma. Graphic for web or publication.
Previous Next
Two figures, possibly representing the twin gods of eastern American Indian mythology, dancing and emerging from the broken body of an underworld snake monster. The broken notch in the snake is similar to Mayan emergence traditions where figures emerge from similar notches in objects representing the underworld. The 2 gods may represent aspects of the planet Venus. The design is based on an engraved shell design from the Spiro mound site in Spiro, Oklahoma and is approximately 900 yrs old.
